End of year Pool trip

We chucked our masks on and leapt onto the bus. It was going to be  fun as day. When we arrived Nikau and I threw off our t-shirts and spirinted over to the dive pool to pop some fat as manus.

It was starting to get cold so we jumped out to have a feed, Nikau fell asleep within five minutes, while I dived back in to have some shoulder wars with Ken and Hemi. Next we went to pop some more fat ones and to watch the bottle pops.

A little while later, we jumped back on the bus and cruised back to school to have a sausage sizzle and to play some games. It was a mean as day!

Fun games with Paulo

Monday morning Room 5 learned some cool games from Matua Paulo.
Game 1 - Pass the ball to your team without dropping the ball 10 times.
Game 2 - Pass the ball to your team member then they touch the ground with the ball. Then  they can run and pass the ball to your next teammate. Do this 10 times without dropping the ball.
Game 3 - Pass the ball to your teammates 10 times without passing it back to the person you received it from.
Game 4 - Pass the ball to your teammates down the court. Then a teammate has to have 1 foot or 2 feet in one of the 5 hexagons. You have to throw the ball to them while they're in the hexagon. Once that's done the hexagon is removed. The team with no hexagons left is the winner.
Here are some photos of Room 5 playing.

Watersafety Dryland sessions with Whaea Nancy

Today Room 5 had our a Water safety Dryland session with Whaea Nancy. She was very interesting and shared fun games we'll be doing in the Watersafe lessons next term.
She gave us good ideas about not swimming in the local Wairoa awa because it's dirty and polluted. Her advice is if you go, make sure you go with someone older (ideally an adult), make sure someone knows you're there and don't jump in unless you've checked first.
Whaea Nancy said if you go to the beach or river this summer take a flotation device, towel to name a few things.
Whaea Nancy also said to use the scull technique to swim in a river.  She also said if you get into trouble at the beach or river to ring 111 and ask for the Fire Brigade who will direct you to the Ahipara Surf Life Rescue.

Ahipara Ag day 2021

This year we had a different Ag day compared to the usual.  Due to being in Alert Level 2, we couldn't have our pets come in to school like they usually would.  So we made a compromise where tauira (students) could take photos of their pet and write a story about them.  The other option was they could make a movie about their pet.

Every class made a variety of cool Ag day creations which were judged by our Teacher Aides instead of out of school volunteer judges.  Here are photos of creations Room 5 made together.  They did Biscuit decorating, made Recycled creatures/creations, Handwriting samples, Potato characters and Mural - Whakataukī (sayings) Art.

Kauri Dieback with Whaea Stella

Today we had a really interesting visitor - Stella from Northland Regional Council who came to speak to Room 3. 4 & 5 about Kauri Dieback.  She spoke to us about some really interesting topics.

Did you know...

Endemic means  - Only can be found in this country e.g kiwi, kukupa, moa

Native - Made it's way here on it's own

Introduced - brought to NZ & had help from humans

Fan worms are eating our native and endemic creature's food

Pollution (poo) is infecting our Moana and awa  e.g ecoli in the water

Kairaru - Largest Kauri on record was found in Okaihau.  It's trunk was 10 metres wide and it's height from base to top was 65 metres in length.

There are only 7% Kauri trees left

Uses of Kauri - houses, furniture, floorboards, gum ,varnish, tattoos with fish oil, toothpaste

Kauri are 250 million years

Humans have inhabited the earth for 150 000 years

The main message Whaea Stella promoted was - How important we all are.  Why? Because we can be the ones to protect our Kauri from Dieback.

Who can be Kaitiaki?  We all can be protectors of our Kauri trees and nature in general.

 Stages of Kauri

Sapling, Ricker, Mature

Kauri dieback is a...

- phytophthora: plant destroyer

Agathidiciada - Kauri killer

There are Feeder roots, osspores, zoosspores.

Zoospore can smell the nitrogen and stops the nutrients

Key messages:

To help keep Kauri Dieback away from our Kauri you need to...

Scrub, check, spray trigene

Protect our taonga, be a kaitiaki, do what you love, keep Kauri standing - clean your boots

Terrific Tennis

Walt: hit the ball using different strokes

Bounce, bounce bounce go the tennis balls along with the screech of room 5 students excited voices. Learning how to use different strokes such as volleying backhand and serving are just a few.

 Reflection:
We learned to hit the ball with the front of the racket (forehand stroke) and used backhand strokes.
We enjoyed playing doubles.
We found it challenging to practice our volleys which is when your buddy throws you the ball and you hit the ball back, don't let the ball hit the ground and you're close to the net.
We could improve by not hitting the ball down but up.

Horohopu

Walt: play Horohopu

To play Horohopu you split your class into two groups. The ref throws the ball up in the air & you have to pass it to your team mates without running, until you cross the goal area.
Reflection:
We learned how to play a new game called Horohopu.
We enjoyed learning to play a new game and to practice our throwing and catching skills.
We sometimes found it challenging to listen carefully to instructions.
Next time we could work on looking at and listening to the speaker without talking.
